Barranquilla Carnival

The mixture is present in all the demonstrations of the Carnival of Barranquilla. The cultures of different groups of people who arrived in the Colombian Caribbean coast were mixed, and over time were created new expressions that characterize our identity.

The carnival is the most important people of Barranquilla, the gayest, the most libertarian, which reflects more strongly the cheery and creative spirit of our people, and affirms our membership in the Caribbean.

It is the feast of greatest joy, the highest dignity, where we are all actors. Every dance, every cumbia, each troupe, every costume contest to make this event the best show not just for show but especially to enjoy it, because that is the Caribbean, where, as in the African dances, the dancer is the spectator and the spectator is a dancer

The Carnival of Barranquilla has its remote origins in the carnival that came to America from Spain. Hence its spirit of renewal and change similar to that inspired this holiday season in Europe. Today we find in the Carnival of Barranquilla facts established by the traditions, such as dances, cumbias, comedies, litanies, and some costumes, as well as new and original creations of other extras and costumes that are equally valid that the time-honored, because the fundamental tradition is the feast itself.

The first Carnival of Barranquilla is lost in history, more than a century ago, when Barranquilla was a small town.
